Emerging trends in the management of cucumber mosaic virus in chickpea cultivation: A case study of southern districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), locally known as gram or channa, is a vital crop in the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A survey conducted during 2023–2024 in the Karak and Bannu districts revealed significant incidences of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV, Cucumovirus cucumovirus), Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV, Alfamovirus alfamovirus), and Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV, Potyvirus potyvirus) affecting chickpea crops. Symptoms such as shoot tip chlorosis, reduced leaf size, and leaf reddening were observed. CMV had a mean incidence of 14.96% across both districts, with the highest occurrence (30%) in Shoble Banda (Karak) and the lowest (6.66%) in Hinjal and Lalo Zai (Bannu). AMV and BYMV exhibited average incidences of 8.99% and 7.66%, respectively. Seed transmission analysis in 18 germplasms identified CMV in one sample (50-SL-05-42), while all other samples tested negative for CMV, AMV, and BYMV. Evaluation of chickpea lines for CMV resistance demonstrated variability, with genotypes NKC-5-S-12, 28-NKC-5-S-13, and NKC-5-S-14 exhibiting resistance, while 11-NDC-4-S-3, NDC-4-20-7, 50-SL-05-42, and 2-NDC-727 showed susceptibility. This study underscores the prevalence of CMV, AMV, and BYMV in the Karak and Bannu districts and highlights the varied responses of local chickpea germplasm to CMV infection, which is crucial for developing effective management strategies for this important crop.
