<p>The present study was undertaken to standardize the method of application of nematicides in rice cropping system. The rice plants grown in the soil infested with ~ 1600 <i> Meloidogyne graminicola</i> juveniles/kg soil developed hook-shaped terminal galls on the roots (104 galls/root system). The nematode inflicted a significant decline in the plant length (28–32%), tillers (36%), panicle (34%) and grain yield (28%) of rice cv. PB-1509 over uninoculated control. The seed treatment (ST), root-dip (RD) and soil application (SA) of nematicides suppressed the galling (3–18% and 4–42%), and reproduction of <i>M. graminicola</i> (3–48%), and promoted the plant growth (4–18%), and grain yield (6–23%) over inoculated control. The overall order of effectiveness of the nematicides under pot condition was: fluopyram &gt; carbofuran &gt; iprodione &gt; phorate &gt; chlorpyrifos. The performance of fluopyram was also evaluated in a field infested with ~ 1800 J<sub>2</sub> of <i>M. graminicola</i>/kg soil. The rice cv. PB-1509 grown in the infested plots developed 128 terminal galls/root system and exhibited 23% decrease in the grain yield. The RD and SA of fluopyram significantly reduced the disease incidence (18 and 49%), galling (16 and 44%), egg mass production (11 and 36%), fecundity (13 and 31%), reproduction factor (39–77% and 48–85%), and soil population of <i>M. graminicola</i> (10–15% and 23–45%), and significantly increased the grain yield (11 and 23%, respectively). The soil application was found most effective, and suppressed the disease by 36–49% and improved the rice yield by 23% over control, whereas the ST did not induce significant effects.</p>
