<p>Common bean (<i>Phaseolus vulgaris</i> L<i>.</i>)&#xa0;is the third most important grain legume globally following soybean and groundnut. Its productivity is constrained by virus diseases and seed transmission (ST) is important in the spread and epidemiology of the diseases, serving as primary source of inoculum for further dissemination by insect vectors. Seed transmission of viruses infecting commercial cultivars of common beans from Kano State (KS) Nigeria was investigated. Seed samples were randomly collected from 20 markets from 10 local government areas in KS. Forty seeds per location making a total of 800 seeds were used for the grow-out assay under an insect-proof greenhouse. Leaf samples were tested for viruses using antigen-coated plate-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ACP-ELISA) or reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Data were recorded on seed germination, virus incidence, symptom severity, and virus ST rate. Seed germination rate (78–100%) was similar in all locations. Only 720 of the 800 seeds germinated, and 13 of the seedlings (1.8%) were symptomatic at incidence of 0–14.7%. Symptoms observed were mosaic, mild mottling, vein-banding, and puckering, with a severity range of 1–3. Seed transmission of cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV) (6%) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) (4%) were observed from Kura, Kumbosto, Bichi, Sumaila, Kiru, and Dawakin Kudu LGAs. All samples were negative for cowpea mottle virus, bean common mosaic virus, and begomoviruses. Double (CABMV + CMV) and latent infections were also observed while some virus symptoms were not verified. CABMV ST was prevalent. These findings are relevant for common bean virus disease management in northern Nigeria.</p>
