<p>Root-knot nematode (RKN), <i>Meloidogyne incognita</i> is an important pest of the eggplant causing heavy economic losses. Scarlet eggplant, <i>Solanum gilo</i> is a closely related species of widely cultivated eggplant, <i>S. melongena</i> and has been considered as an important source for its crop improvement. It is also useful as a rootstock for the RKN management. In present study, to identify the source of resistance to <i>M. incognita</i>, germplasm of <i>S. gilo</i> was evaluated during eggplant growing seasons of 2020 and 2021. Challenge inoculation of 1000 second stage juveniles of <i>M. incognita</i> was given to each plant and observations were recorded at 42 days after inoculation. Based on number of root galls, galling index was assigned and host reaction was given. In addition, reproduction potential of RKN was also studied. The root gall number was significantly different in studied accessions. Based on galling index, accession- IC419464 was found as a resistant, accession- EC373485 was found as moderately resistant while all remaining accessions were found as highly susceptible to <i>M. incognita</i>. During repeated evaluations also, the number of eggmasses, eggs per eggmass, multiplication factor, size of root galls and RKN females were significantly reduced in the resistant accession as compared to susceptible accessions. In this study, one novel RKN resistant accession has been identified which can be used for crop improvement programme for RKN management in eggplant.</p>
