Letting Go of Mathematics 12: A Look Back at Learning Mathematics Before the Internet
摘要
The purpose of this article is to try to let go of my Grade 12 final exam in mathematics, which I wrote 30 years ago. Easier said than done, however. Afterall, I’ve been holding onto this exam, physically and literally, for a quarter of a century. It’s true, a quarter of a century. Letting go of something that’s been with you for half of your life isn’t easy and shouldn’t be easy. Letting go should conjure up memories from your past, have you question choices you’ve made, and ponder where you might be if things had gone differently. Not to sound too cliché, but letting go, they say, is a journey, not a destination. As such, this journey, which rummages through old photos, admits to missed opportunities and demonstrates the importance of grades to young, impressionable students, ends, ultimately, with a look back at learning mathematics before the Internet. Spoiler alert, there wasn’t much to it.
