Interdisciplinarity of Plant-Fish Symbiosis: The Use of Aquaponic Systems in STEM Education
摘要
Aquaponics is a system in which a mutually beneficial biological partnership of plants, fish, and bacteria is transformed into an ecosystem by using engineering and technology principles. Aquaponics is one of the promising biologically based technological applications for ensuring environmental sustainability. These systems, which have a wide range of uses from small-scale at-home systems to large-scale food production, are also used as educational tools in classrooms. In this literature review, applications for STEM education are proposed based on the use of aquaponic systems, in which soilless agriculture is combined with fish farming. The interdisciplinary nature of this agricultural method, which is an ideal example of environmental sustainability and is expected to increase its use in the coming years, is thought to be important for combining the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and for interdisciplinary education. There is a need for research showing the use of aquaponics within STEM education and its effects on students. The research provides recommendations for the use of aquaponic systems in STEM education.
