<p>Photosensitive surfactants are a class of intelligent, efficient, and promising surfactants that undergo photochemical reactions under light stimulation, including structural isomerization, photocleavage, photopolarization, and photopolymerization, etc., through embedded photosensitive groups such as azobenzene, homodiphenylethylene, anthraquinone, and spiropyran. This effectively controls the emulsification, dispersion, and wetting properties of their solutions, and has shown great potential in environmental remediation, medicine, biotechnology and industrial synthesis and othere fields. However, there are few reviews on photosensitive surfactants, which limits our comprehensive understanding of this field. Therefore, it is necessary to provide an overview of the current development of photosensitive surfactants, in order to provide clear insights for further development in this field. Consequently, this review summarizes the definition, regulation mechanism, synthesis and application of photosensitive surfactants. Finally, we emphasize the challenges of photosensitive surfactants and propose research strategies to accelerate the research pace in this field and promote their widespread practical applications.</p>
