Alkaline Hydrolysis of Benzyl Benzoate Using Solid Catalysts in Water: Kinetic and Thermodynamic Studies and, Reusability

Solid materials such as alumina-silicate microspheres (ASMS), manganese dioxide, starch derived carbon (SDC), alumina, graphite carbon (GC) and coke were used as catalysts for the alkaline hydrolysis of benzyl benzoate using aqueous sodium hydroxide. The benzoic acid yield as a function of time, ester (0.5–2.5 M) and sodium hydroxide (0.4–2.4 M) concentration, temperature (318–358 K) and catalyst dose (0.1–0.5 g) was determined. Among the six, three of the catalysts were mainly chosen based on their catalytic efficiency on the hydrolysis of benzyl benzoate ester. The real purpose of this work was in the interest of identifying cheap solid catalysts with appreciable hydrolysis efficiency. The kinetic and thermodynamic methods in accordance with the experimental variables were employed. The reuse potential, analysis of catalyst’s cost and the characterization studies for the catalysts were carried out and detailed in the present research paper.
