<p>A series of YAlO<sub>3</sub>:Bi<sup>3+</sup> (YAG:Bi) phosphor has been successfully synthesized by a simple combustion method. X ray diffraction pattern confirms the formation of compound. The synthesized phosphors had average particle size of 2&#xa0;μm. The phosphor had broad band emission centred at 326&#xa0;nm which could be effectively excited by 285&#xa0;nm light. A phosphor converted LED emitting around 326&#xa0;nm has been packaged, using commercially available 285&#xa0;nm chip and YAG:Bi phosphor, for the first time. The emission of this LED matches well with the spectral sensitivity of the common mosquito species like Culex pipiens and Aedes aegypti. Such LEDs may be effectively used in constructing mosquito traps.</p>
