Integration of the Ten Good Deeds (Fuzhi Shishanfa) in Buddhist Educational Endeavours: A Buddhist Approach To Ethical and Character Development
摘要
Buddhist education, characterised by its focus on wisdom and moral values, plays a pivotal role in character building. It continues to promote ethical and character development, ensuring its applicability in diverse cultural settings. This paper explores the “Ten Good Deeds (Fuzhi Shishanfa 福智十善法),” which are underpinned by the principles of sīla, illustrating how ethical teachings can be adapted to create a positive educational culture. The transformative impact of integrating the Ten Good Deeds into educational practices has yielded significant benefits across various aspects of child development. The study highlights how the Ten Good Deeds enhance the learning process, cultivate moral values, nurture religious feelings, foster good family relationships, and create a loving and peaceful society. Furthermore, it provides observations from the daily operation of Than Hsiang Kindergarten to contextualise how these teachings are perceived by teachers and parents in Malaysia. This paper underscores the potential of Buddhist ethics to foster holistic development and moral integrity in students. This approach not only addresses academic achievement but also supports the overall ethical and spiritual growth of individuals, contributing positively to their communities and society. These findings offer valuable insights for educators and policymakers aiming to incorporate ethical education within a modern, multicultural educational framework.
