Morphological and molecular screening of mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss.] genotypes against Albugo candida (Pers.) Kuntze causing white rust

White rust, caused by Albugo candida (Pers.) Kuntze, is a major disease affecting cruciferous crops. This disease can cause yield losses ranging from 20 to 90% in mustard crops. Screening was done to find out the sources of resistance against Albugo candida. Fifty available genotypes (SJRM 01–46) including two donor parents (Heera and Donskaja-IV) and two susceptible checks (Varuna and RSPR-01) were screened under natural field conditions during Rabi 2022-24. These genotypes were analyzed on molecular basis by using intron polymorphic (IP) markers At5g41560 and At2g36360 linked to white rust resistance loci, AcB1-A4.1 and AcB1-A5.1 respectively, for validating the presence of the resistant alleles in the examined genotypes. Out of 50 genotypes, 37 genotypes revealed the presence of resistant alleles confirming white rust resistance loci with markers. The genotypes in which both the resistant genes were present that is AcB1-A5.1 and AcB1-A4.1, exhibited highly resistant reaction under natural field conditions and genotypes which had only one gene incorporated that is AcB1-A5.1 showed resistant reaction whereas genotypes having AcB1-A4.1 showed moderately resistant reaction and genotypes not having either of genes showed susceptible to highly susceptible reaction.
