<p>This study evaluated the phenotypic and differential responses of ten <i>Capsicum</i> spp. genotypes to <i>Phytophthora capsici</i>, one of the most dangerous pathogens of pepper and chili pepper. Colonization of root, hypocotyl, and fruit tissues by the pathogen, root and crown rot severity (RCR), and fruit rot (FR) were analyzed. Marcato, Quetzal, ECU-2254B, and California Wonder seedlings were the most susceptible genotypes (<i>P</i> = 0.0001) to RCR, with a severity of 4, while adult plants of these genotypes showed a RCR severity of 5. Genotypes C5, ECU-11995, ECU-12967, ECU-9129, ECU-12831, and Nathalie showed resistance to RCR (severity &lt; 1; <i>P</i> = 0.0001) at the seedling stage. However, adult plants of these genotypes were susceptible (severity = 4), except Nathalie, which remained resistant (severity = 0). In seedlings, susceptible genotypes presented an average colonization of 51% (<i>P</i> = 0.0001) and 79% (<i>P</i> ≤ 0.0001) in root and hypocotyl tissues, respectively. In adult plants, hypocotyls and roots of nine genotypes were colonized by 47% (<i>P</i> = 0.00001) and 97% (<i>P</i> = 0.00001), respectively, except for Nathalie, which did not present colonization. The fruits of eight genotypes presented FR (severity 3.9) and intense colonization by the pathogen, which were classified as susceptible (<i>P</i> = 0.00001), except for ECU-12967 and ECU-9129, which showed no symptoms. In conclusion, the susceptibility to <i>P</i>. <i>capsici</i> among <i>Capsicum</i> spp. genotypes varied depending on the infected tissue and was unrelated to age. We suggest that independent mechanisms regulating resistance may be associated with the infected organ.</p>
