Synergistic effect of Providencia rettgeri MF with essential oil from Tetraclinis articulata on the control of tobacco bacterial wildfire disease

The present study aims to compare the effects of Providencia rettgeri MF and three Bacillus strains as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on Nicotiana benthamiana, and to evaluate their ability to control wildfire disease when used alone or in combination with an essential oil isolated from Tetraclinis articulata. Results showed that all the strains significantly improved the germination rate of N. benthamiana, promoted stem length, and enhanced the number of leaves and flowers. However, P. rettgeri MF proved to be the most efficient. All the strains significantly improved photosynthetic parameters, such as net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate. Moreover, they were effective in reducing the severity of wildfire disease caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci on N. benthamiana. Disease severity was further reduced when rhizobacteria treatment was combined with the essential oil, with greater efficacy of P. rettgeri. This reduction averaged 76% and was associated with a significant decrease in bacterial populations in planta. A synergistic effect between both treatments was also observed for the occurrence of the oxidative burst, as evidenced by the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, and the potentiation of total phenolic content and the activities of Catalase and Ascorbate peroxidase after inoculation with P. syringae pv. tabaci.
