Assessing disease severity in Senegalia catechu saplings inoculated with Ganoderma lucidum

Senegalia catechu is a multipurpose tree susceptible to various fungal diseases, including root rot caused by Ganoderma lucidum. This pathogen has the potential to infect a wide range of trees through soil borne infections. In this study, a strain of G. lucidum was artificially inoculated in one-year-old saplings of S. catechu to investigate the symptomatology, the course of the disease and impact of the fungus on such a host. Symptoms included yellowing of upper leaves, which progressed downward. Ultimately, leaf drop from the tips leads to stag horn appearance, culminating in the death of the entire sapling. Anatomical dissection confirmed decomposition of root constituents. Additionally, the amount of chlorophylls was significantly lower in inoculated compared to non-inoculated control saplings. We conclude that following G. lucidum infection, root decay leads to leaf yellowing due to reduced water and nutrient supply, which subsequently diminished photosynthetic efficiency. This study enhances our understanding of G. lucidum infections, and may contribute to long-term strategies for sustainability and resilience that ensure plant health and productivity.
