Evaluation of mungbean accessions for susceptibility to the non-adapted powdery mildew Erysiphe pisi

Mungbean (Vigna radiata) is a warm-season legume whose productivity is significantly hampered by powdery mildew fungi belonging to the Erysiphaceae family, primarily Erysiphe polygoni and Podosphaera xanthii. Although mungbean is not a host for Erysiphe pisi, the main causal agent of powdery mildew disease in cool-season legumes such as peas (Pisum sativum) and Medicago spp., temperature change-driven shifts in growing seasons may make mungbean vulnerable to this fungal species. To evaluate the susceptibility of mungbean to this non-adapted powdery mildew, we challenged 61 mungbean accessions with E. pisi under controlled environment conditions at 22 ℃, followed by a microscopy-based assessment of fungal growth. Based on the extent of fungal growth, 46 mungbean accessions were categorized as ‘highly resistant’ and 15 as ‘resistant’ to E. pisi. Histological analysis suggests that both penetration and post-penetration resistance mechanisms are active in mungbean; however, a small percentage of E. pisi conidia developed primary and/or secondary hyphae on the resistant accessions when grown at 22 °C, a phenotype that was not observed when a subset of the same accessions was grown at 25 °C. Our results indicate early signs of a temperature-dependent resistance breakdown in mungbean against the non-adapted powdery mildew E. pisi.
