Integrating mass balance and pollution indices for the determination of wetlands environmental quality at Obuasi, Ghana

This research integrates environmental pollution indices and mass balance values of Cadmium (Cd), Arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg) and Iron (Fe) in some selected wetlands at Obuasi, Ghana. The aim is to develop graphic models to relate relevant pollution indices and geochemical mass balance (BR) estimations. The specific objectives are to; (i) determine the concentrations of Cd, As, Pb, Hg and Fe, (ii) assess the BR, single and integrated indices of the metals, (iii) compare the BR with the indices (iv) and integrate BR and the relevant pollution indices. The elements concentrations were determined by Absorption Spectrometer model number ECIL-4129. Crustal values of 0.10 mg/kg, 1.80 mg/kg, 15.00 mg/kg, 0.07 mg/kg and 35900.00 mg/kg for Cd, As, Pb, Hg and Fe respectively were used as reference to calculate the BR and the pollution indices. The metals concentrations are above World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization permissible limits. The single indices indicated that, Cd, As and Hg are contaminated within all the selected wetlands. BR of the metals generally show positive correlation with the single and integrated indices. Integration of BR values generated Geochemical Mass Balance Ratio Index (BRI), also having a very strong positive correlation with Pollution Load Index (PLI), Degree of Contamination (Dc) and Ecological Risk Index (RI). The regression models display BRI correlates over 99 % to PLI, Dc and RI at all the study sites. Hence, PLI, Dc and RI values at the study area could be predicted from the BRI graphical models.
