Study on measurement of inhalation and ingestion dose due to radon (222Rn) concentration in drinking water of Jagalur Taluk, Karnataka, India

Most life on the Earth depends on water, and the quality of drinking water is a critical factor in determining human health. The primary objective of this study was to calculate the risk associated with radon (222Rn) concentrations in drinking water. Thirty drinking water samples were collected from various locations in Jagalur Taluk, Davanagere District, Karnataka, India. 222Rn concentration was estimated using the emanometry technique. 222Rn in the water sample is transferred to a Lucas cell, and then alpha counting is done using a radon detector and programmable counting system. The 222Rn activity in water ranges from 6.23 ± 0.15 to 127.89 ± 1.88 Bq l⁻1, with an average value of 34.68 ± 0.84 Bq l⁻1. Except for one, all recorded readings were well below the action threshold of 100 Bq l⁻1 as suggested by the European Commission and the World Health Organization (WHO). The study also looked at the ingestion dose and annual effective dose for different age groups. With the exception of infants 0–12 months, the projected average radiation doses for each age group were found to be higher than the WHO acceptable limit of 100 μSv y⁻1.
