<p>One of the strategic approaches to addressing water scarcity and achieving sustainable water resource management in Iran's arid and semi-arid climatic conditions is rainwater harvesting. The present study aims to examine the awareness and attitudes of the Iranian academic community—as scientific and cultural elites with relative technical knowledge—regarding rainwater harvesting systems. The research analyzes their understanding, experience, inclination, and attitudes concerning existing barriers and supportive mechanisms to improve social acceptance and utilization of these systems. The results indicate that the Iranian academic community, knowledgeable about the water crisis and the country's dry and semi-arid climatic conditions, demonstrates good awareness of rainwater harvesting system concepts (87%) and objectives (83%). About 85% identified a lack of governmental policy and support as dominating barriers to adoption. The majority of the respondents considered free education and financial and technical support from relevant institutions as motivating factors. Furthermore, the individuals with a higher awareness level of rainwater harvesting systems have more emphatic attitudes toward rainwater harvesting's role in water resource conservation, cost-effectiveness, lack of government support, installation in educational institutions, willingness to implement at home, and the value of these systems for non-potable uses. Therefore, based on the research results, an integrated and multifaceted approach should be developed and implemented, including educational, supportive, technical, and economic strategies from relevant institutions to promote rainwater harvesting systems in Iran. This approach can improve water resource protection and management and help address the water scarcity crisis in Iran.</p>
