Assessing renewable energy trends: a global bibliometric analysis of biomass, solar, wind, and geothermal resources with emphasis on Cameroon

This research provides a comprehensive analysis of global renewable energy research (RER), focusing particularly on Cameroon. The study aims to identify global trends in renewable energy potential and create a foundation for energy planning strategies specific to Cameroon. A key goal is to assess the country’s renewable energy potential and its role in sustainable development. The research employs a bibliometric analysis based on a dataset from Scopus, including 11,680 documents, 11,124 authors, 2986 sources, and 27,403 organizations, spanning from 1982 to 2025. The dataset was analyzed using Microsoft Excel and specialized software to explore the landscape of renewable energy research. Initial findings show a notable increase in global and local research engagement, indicating areas for future collaboration. Key advancements in biomass, solar, wind, and geothermal energy are highlighted, with leading countries driving innovation. However, emerging nations like Cameroon have considerable untapped potential in both research and collaboration. Although Cameroon’s contributions are currently modest, global trends suggest opportunities to strengthen its position through increased international collaboration. The study highlights significant gaps, especially in the areas of biomass and geothermal energy studies and proposes strategies to improve the integration of renewable energy in Cameroon. It underscores the importance of targeted investments and research efforts in the nation's renewable energy sector, enabling Cameroon to play a more active role in the global shift toward sustainable energy, enhance energy security, and drive economic development.
