Geospatial mapping of groundwater potential zones using multi criteria evaluation based AHP approach in semi-arid region of Babil, Iraq

Groundwater is one of the most important solutions to face the threat of drought and surface water scarcity. Delineation of the groundwater potential zone is paramount to fulfilling the water demand. The main objective of this study is to identify groundwater potential zones in Babil, Iraq. This study uses geospatial techniques based on the AHP. The groundwater potential zone map was identified using overlay analysis in ArcGIS 10.5 software. Nine thematic layers were used including elevation, drainage density, slope, geology, precipitation, soil type, soil moisture, NDWI, and land cover. This final map classified the study area into three categories: low, moderate, and high. Finally, the area and percentage for the three classes were computed. The results showed that about 33.3% of the study area comprises a high suitability groundwater potential zone, and about 62.2% is moderate suitability. At the same time, the Low suitability groundwater potential zone includes only 4.5%. The study's findings will benefit policymakers in conserving groundwater for sustainable use in water deficit regions. Theoretically, the proposed methodology is applicable and can be developed in the future according to the multiple criteria that researchers deem necessary according to the study area and its conditions.
