Assessment of aquifer potential in parts of Southern Bida Basin, Southwestern Nigeria

The vertical electrical sounding (VES) technique was used to evaluate groundwater and aquifer parameters in the Southern Bida Basin. The aquifer potential was determined by estimating hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity, transverse unit resistance, and longitudinal conductance. The findings revealed four distinct geo-electric layers in areas within the basement complex: top soil, lateritic layer, weathered basement, and fresh basement with resistivity values ranging from 20.3–500 Ωm, 200–500 Ωm, 20–350.5 Ωm and 54–4741.1 Ωm respectively. Within the sedimentary basin, four-five geo-electric layers corresponding to top soil, sandy clay layer, clayey sand layer, sandstone layer, and the clay unit with resistivity values ranging from 31.4–2344 Ωm, 1.55–3211 Ωm, 1.38–2913 Ωm, 106–6475 Ωm and 303–112 Ωm respectively were delineated. The aquiferous units found in the research region are sandstone and weathered basement layers. The settlements of Kotonkarfi, Gegu-Egba, Banda, Okumi, and Karara in the Lokoja and Patti Formations were identified as having significant aquifer potential and account for roughly 15.5% of the research area. 79.1% of the region was assessed as having moderate aquifer potential; these locations constitute the bulk of the research area, particularly the settlements within the Patti Formation. The remaining 5.5% of the research area is in the low aquifer potential zone, which encompasses the southern portion of the study region (communities within the Agbaja Formation). As a result, the research region is classified as having moderate or intermediate aquifer potential.
