First Insights on Sowing Time and Cultivar Selection of Sweet Corn for Optimal Yield and Shelf Life Under Agro-Climatic Conditions of Multan

Sweet corn is a trending agronomic crop in Pakistan. Due to the lack of awareness regarding suitable time and variety in a specific locality, farmers could not obtain the desired production and handsome profit. Therefore, a study was conducted to assess the optimum sowing date and most suitable variety for sweet corn in terms of higher grain and biological yield, and postharvest shelf life in Multan. The sweet corn was sown on different sowing dates i.e. 10th Aug, 25th Aug, 10th Sep, and 25th Sep in Multan, Pakistan. The Suagr-71, Maaki Meeva, and CCRI varieties were sown on above mentioned sowing dates. Early emergence and physiological maturity were recorded in the CCRI when it sowed on 25th Aug as compared to others. The CCRI sown on 25th Aug showed the maximum number of days to reach 50% tasselling and silking. The maximum plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves per plant, leaf area index, and leaf greenness were also noted in the CCRI when sown on 25th Aug. Additionally, it was recorded that the CCRI grown on 25th Aug had a higher dry matter accumu lation. The CCRI sown on 25th Aug also had longer cobs, higher grain weight, and biological yields. Lower physiological weight loss and kernel hardiness, and higher sensory scores were noted in the CCRI. In conclusion, under Multan conditions, the best variety to sow for the sweet corn crop is the CCRI, which should be sown on 25th Aug.
