摘要

This study examines how microaggression occurs in schools, a microcosm of society, through a qualitative study. This study on microaggressions addresses three sub-types of microaggression, being microassault, microinsult and microinvalidation, as well as three experiential aspects of microaggression, namely experiencing, perpetrating, and witnessing. Findings are presented under five themes as (1) microaggressive behaviors, (2) causes of microaggressions, (3) reactions to microaggressions, (4) consequences of microaggressions for administrators, teachers, and students, and (5) coping strategies. The findings confirm that the effect of microaggression as just like a paper cut on your hand, painful at first, then seems trivial, the harm caused by microaggressions can accumulate over time, and eventually leads to deeper, more lasting damage. Investigating microaggression in school environment is important to provide the necessary instructional leadership on this issue to embed positive and responsive communication, which is inclusive, egalitarian and fair for everyone, and to disseminate to the society.
