Role of Traditional Games in Shaping Cultural Identity and Strengthening Community Cohesion
摘要
Traditional games in the Poumai Naga culture are integral to festivals and social life, symbolising unity and fostering community cohesion. Common games, such as wrestling, kabaddi, and tug-of-war, offer a platform for youth to demonstrate physical strength while promoting camaraderie and preserving cultural heritage. These games also serve to build relationships and teach essential life skills. This study uses a qualitative approach, employing semi-structured interviews with community members from four Poumai Naga villages, Phuba, Tungjoy, Saranamai, and Koide, to explore the cultural values embedded in these traditional games. The research explores how traditional games shape cultural identity and strengthen community cohesion. The research highlights the ongoing practice of traditional games in the Poumai community, despite the influence of modern sports. Through thematic analysis of primary and secondary data, the study underscores the significance of these games in preserving their identity, while also acknowledging the global appeal and shared traits of traditional games across cultures. Additionally, the study emphasises the potential for educators to incorporate traditional games into teaching social science concepts, as these games serve as lived expressions of social norms, community organisation, cooperation, and identity. The embedded rituals and symbolic elements of the games provide rich context for understanding topics such as tradition, authority, communal values, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. The integration of such games in both formal education and community development initiatives reflects their dual function as instruments of learning and preservation. The continued practice of traditional games in the Poumai Naga community represents a rich blend of recreation, ritual, and social function, reinforcing values of strength, respect, and tradition in shaping the identity of future generations while offering contemporary relevance in educational and developmental frameworks.
