摘要

Acid attack is an act of aggression directed to cause suffering to the victim. The majority of the victims of acid attacks are women, and is considered a gender-based violence. The present study provides a detailed understanding of the experiences of acid attack survivors from India. Ten survivors of acid attacks were contacted through two non-governmental organisations- Chhanv Foundation and Brave Souls Foundation, operating in Delhi-National Capital Region, India. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the survivors, which were then transcribed. Thematic content analysis was conducted to extract themes. The six broad themes that emerged from the analysis are rejection from society, sense of identity, old me v/s new me, lifelong imprisonment, thoughts about future and coping. Various sub-themes also emerged from the main themes. The themes have been derived from the narratives of the survivors indicating the psycho-social challenges they faced after the attack, how they are coping with them, and how they look at their future. Based on the findings, the study concludes that survivors of acid attacks face various legal, psychological and social challenges after the attack. These findings suggest a need to develop a tailored and culture specific psychological intervention for acid attack survivors, along with policy reforms for the prevention and rehabilitation of the survivors.
