Performance Evaluation of IMERG Satellite-Based Precipitation Estimates Against Rain Gauge Records in the Sebou Watershed, Morocco
摘要
The availability of high-quality precipitation data at various temporal scales is crucial for conducting hydro-climatic studies. However, obtaining accurate precipitation measurements remains a challenge for researchers. The launch of Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) products represents the most practical alternative to address the problem of in-situ observations. While IMERG products represent a valuable source of precipitation data, their applications require careful prior assessment. In this study, we evaluate the performance of IMERG-F V06 precipitation estimates by comparing them with ground-based measurements at both monthly and seasonal timescales. The assessment included statistical and spatial analysis of the measured and estimated precipitation within the Sebou watershed. The findings of continuous statistical measurements indicate that the accuracy of IMERG-F strongly depends on topography, climatic conditions, and rainfall intensity. The analysis of metrics across the entire Sebou watershed indicates that IMERG-F demonstrates good accuracy in detecting precipitation, with a Correlation Coefficient (CC) of 0.86, a Relative Bias (RBIAS) of 9%, a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 19 mm, and a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 33 mm. The spatial distribution of both products reveals that IMERG-F underestimates precipitation in high-altitude regions during winter, autumn, and spring, whereas at lower altitudes, it tends to overestimate precipitation. These results highlight that improving IMERG products is essential to ensure the availability of reliable precipitation data, which are crucial for water resources management and hydro-climatic risk forecasting.
