<p>Breast cancer is the leading malignant tumor in women in developed countries, including Europe, and its treatment shows considerable regional diversity. In 2003, the European Parliament released a&#xa0;report stating that every woman diagnosed with breast cancer should have the right to be treated by a&#xa0;“multidisciplinary team” within a&#xa0;comprehensive network of certified, multidisciplinary breast centers adhering to defined quality standards. In 2009, seven Austrian medical societies involved in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment (radiology, pathology, gynecology, surgery, nuclear medicine, medical oncology, and radiation oncology) established an interdisciplinary committee dedicated to quality assurance and certification of breast care centers in Austria. A&#xa0;requirement catalog, including key performance indicators, was established by these societies according to international guidelines and evidence-based standards. Certification was performed by an external partner (Doc-Cert AG). Due to the geographical characteristics of Austria, the model of affiliated partners of certified centers, harboring fewer than 100 primary breast cancer cases per year, was established. In 2023, the proportion of patients treated in certified centers had increased significantly to more than 90%. The key performance indicators such as preoperative presentation at tumor boards and others improved significantly. With respect to participation rates in clinical trials, there is room for improvement, particularly among affiliated partners and non-university hospitals. Overall, the Austrian breast health centers have become established as a&#xa0;viable and sustainable model for quality assurance and certification, ensuring nationwide, guideline-based care.</p>
