<p>With a prevalence of almost 1%, chronic pancreatitis is not a rare disease in Europe. In addition to socio-economic consequences, it has a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. This article focuses on the treatment strategy for chronic pancreatitis, a disease for which patients are often referred to a surgeon at a late stage. However, early surgical intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes. The indication for surgery should therefore be discussed early in the course of the disease by an interdisciplinary team of experts (“visceral medical board”). Several indication-specific, symptom-driven surgical treatment options are currently available, primarily aimed at pain relief, management of complications, resection in cases of suspected malignancy, and improvement of quality of life. This article highlights the risks and complications of these complex procedures as well as future prospects of surgery for chronic pancreatitis.</p>
