<p>The rapid evolution of 3D printing technology has greatly influenced engineering applications, enabling complex geometries, material performance and customization. This review article reviews the progressions of additive manufacturing in the design and development of 3D printing for various engineering disciplines, including aerospace, automotive, medical and structural engineering. It focuses mainly on the areas of material innovation, topology optimization, process optimization, and application based challenges. This review identifies research gaps and outlines future directions for improving the industrial applicability of additive manufacturing.</p>
