The 100 most cited articles on root coverage in periodontology: a bibliometric analysis

This study analyzed the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles on root coverage in periodontology. A search was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection. Data extracted included: title, citation metrics, publication year, journal, study design, study objective, surgical technique used for root coverage, graft material, single or multiple gingival recessions, authors, institution, and country. Bibliometric networks were generated using VOSviewer. The identified articles were published between 1985 and 2018. The citation count ranged from 77 to 579 (mean: 139.3). The Journal of Periodontology was the most cited journal (7777 citations; 54/100). The most frequent study design was interventional studies (6578 citations; 49/100). Most articles evaluated graft material (5430 citations; 43/100) in the coronally advanced flap technique (8144 citations; 55/100) in single gingival recessions (4377 citations; 36/100). Europe had 57 articles (7863 citations), and Italy was the most prominent country (5815 citations; 41/100). The University of Florence had the highest number of citations (2009 citations; 12/100). Cortellini P (2103 citations; 15/100) was the most prominent author. Graft materials used for coronally advanced flaps in interventional studies were the most frequent focus of investigation in the most cited articles.
