<p>Anxiety sensitivity (AS) and distress tolerance (DT) are psychological constructs that measure one’s ability to accept difficult emotions and sensations. The Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) and Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS) are the pre-eminent instruments for measuring these constructs. This study examines measurement invariance of these instruments across clinical (<i>n</i> = 1521) and non-clinical (<i>n</i> = 1163) populations in Japan. Measurement invariance between these populations was assessed using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Both the ASI-3 and DTS exhibited full metric invariance (similar factor loadings) and partial scalar invariance (similar mean values) across clinical status. With statistical and theoretical justification, intercepts of items 3, 4, 6, 7, and 11 of the ASI-3 and intercepts of items 6 and 7 of the DTS were freed to achieve partial invariance. These findings support the ability of these instruments to measure AS and DT across cultures and validate that their factor structures hold true in unseen samples.</p>
