Structural Design and Analysis of an Incline Impact Test Rig for Packaging Integrity Testing
摘要
During transportation or handling packaging material, different stresses such as drops, impacts, and vibrations are tremendous challenges to packaging integrity. To determine the performance of packages against these types of stresses, an Incline Impact Test Rig was created in accordance with ASTM D880 and ISO 2244 specifications. The study emphasizes the design of structure and appropriate material selection for the fabrication of the test rig to ensure durability, repetitiveness, and low deflection under high impact loads. Trolley, guide rails, impact surface, and support structure are elements that need appropriate material selection. Following a careful consideration of various alternatives on mechanical strength, price and supply, findings revealed that IS 4923 was the most appropriate material, having a high strength-to-weight ratio and low deflection. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was done to minimize the material thickness to optimize and maintain structural integrity. This test rig offers a consistent and effective way to test packaging material in real-life scenarios, assisting industries to fine-tune their designs for safe transport and minimum product damage. International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) compliance ensures packages tested on this rig conform to international shipping requirements, increasing protective packaging reliability.
