A Review on Effects of Sulfate in Anaerobic Digestion and Effect of Auto Generative Pressure on Biogas Production

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an established biological process widely employed for the stabilization of organic waste and the production of biogas. However, the treatment of sulfate-rich substrates presents significant challenges due to competition between sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and methanogens for electron donors such as hydrogen. This interaction results in hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) formation, which inhibits methanogenic activity and reduces methane yield. Auto-generative high-pressure digestion (AHPD) has emerged as a promising approach for enhancing methane content through increased carbon dioxide (CO₂) solubility and in situ gas upgrading. Nevertheless, the extent to which AHPD suppresses SRB activity remains system-dependent and requires further mechanistic investigation. This approach modulates the sulfate reduction pathway, thereby improving biogas yields. Thus, the review concluded that alternative approach can reduce hydrogen sulfide and increase methane production. Such a technique offers the possibility of improving wastewater treatment while generating valuable products from waste streams.
