Sustainable Waste Management Through Development of Organic Composts Using Laboratory Synthesized Liquid Activators

Development of efficient, user-friendly compost is crucial as India continues to urbanize and generate increasing amounts of organic waste. The present research developed three high-quality composts (J-C, P-C, S-C) using specially formulated liquid activators (J-LA, P-LA, S-LA) to accelerate the rate of decomposition. J-LA, containing jaggery, lemon-juice and banana, produced J-C compost with optimal nutrient levels (0.61% nitrogen, 0.52% potassium, 0.33% phosphorus) and a balanced C: N ratio (30.02). P-LA, made with palm, vinegar and orange pulp, created P-C compost showing faster mineralization potential with 0.59% nitrogen-content and 0.34% phosphorus-content. S-LA, incorporating sugarcane, gooseberry-juice and plantain pulp, yielded S-C compost with neutral pH (6.6) and enhanced micronutrients (43.02 mg/kg iron, 4.68 mg/L calcium). All achieved remarkable efficiency, completing in just 14-days. Analytical techniques (X-ray-diffraction, Fourier-transform-infra-red, Scanning-electron-microscopy, Energy-dispersive-spectroscopy) confirmed each compost’s unique properties. J-C exhibited high crystallinity for slow nutrient release, P-C showed amorphous characteristics for rapid soil replenishment, and S-C demonstrated balanced decomposition kinetics. All the composts shared excellent moisture retention (31.7%), plasticity index (20.81%), and electrical conductivity (11,000-11,125 µmhos/cm), indicating rich ionic nutrient content. Sieve analysis and field tests revealed 30-40% increases in earthworm populations, 25-35% better water retention, and 15-20% higher nutrient availability. Statistical analysis validated laboratory and field data. The research work confirms that, laboratory-synthesized liquid activators can produce modified high-quality composts, offering sustainable solutions for organic waste management and soil improvement. The study provides practical options for farmers to select specific compost-activator combinations based on their soil requirements and crop needs.
