How the Carbon Neutrality Process Moves Forward: a Global-scale Evaluation from Past To Future

As industrial civilization has advanced, carbon dioxide emissions have exacerbated multiple climate issues, making carbon neutrality an imperative global goal. This study examines the development, exchange, core theme, and future prediction of knowledge and technology at the country level using a dataset comprising 2,203 articles and 231 patents. Through the analysis of unstructured data, the following findings emerge: (1) With the introduction of international carbon emission reduction policies, the relevant publications have gone through the stages of explosion, fluctuation and development, which are demonstrated by the rapid and fluctuating growth trends of articles and patents, respectively; (2) The dominance of the United States is evident through the surplus of knowledge flow and technology transfer with countries such as Germany, United Kingdom, China, and others in global carbon collaborative research. International patent organizations play a crucial role as bridges between technology inflow and outflow; (3) Major countries’ knowledge system prioritize global climate research and energy structure transitions, while technology development focuses on clean energy technologies; (4) Carbon reduction and carbon sequestration emerge as primary pathways towards achieving carbon neutrality. S-curve analysis suggests seizing opportunities in new energy technologies with development potential. Future trends encompass complementary multi-energy sources technologies and exploration of technology commercialization models.
