<p>Carbon Footprint (CF) is a modern approach that describes human greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), which cause global climate change. The goal of this research was to explore Greek secondary students’ implicit understanding of CF. Data were collected through the use of a specially developed questionnaire with 12 images, depicting everyday products and services. Participants included 416 secondary students in grades 7, 10 and 12 from the greater metropolitan area of Thessaloniki, northern Greece. Collected data were subjected to both qualitative and quantitative analysis and the results indicate that while students recognize the negative impact of energy use on the environment, they do not apprehend the CF concept. Energy consumption itself and GHGs emissions were also identified as ways of negatively affecting the environment. It is suggested to update the secondary education curricula by incorporating the footprints’ concepts and providing teachers’ training on these issues to take steps towards sustainability.</p>
