Can Public Environmental Concern Mitigate Air Pollution?? Evidence from the Daily Data of Yangtze River Delta Cities

Persistent environmental degradation has increased public environmental concern (PEC). Meanwhile,the widespread adoption of the internet has created more opportunities for citizens to participate in environmental governance. In this context, Using the daily panel data of Yangtze River Delta (YRD) cities, this study quantifies PEC through the Baidu search index and employs the two-way fixed effects model and spatial Durbin model to analyze PEC’s impact on air pollution. The results show that: PEC exhibits cyclical fluctuations within the YRD region, and cities with more developed economies typically have higher PEC levels. Moreover, PEC significantly reduces air pollution, and robustness tests confirm that this emission reduction effect is persistent. Further, the heterogeneity analysis indicates that PEC significantly contributes to emission mitigation only in cities characterized by high PEC and relatively low air pollution levels. In addition, both PEC and PM2.5 concentrations in the YRD demonstrate notable spatial clustering patterns. Finally, increases in PEC are found to significantly reduce air pollution both locally and in surrounding areas, thereby showing the importance of strengthening public environmental awareness.
