“You Look Divine!”: An AI-Assisted Analysis of Supportive Strategies To Transgender Groups on Spanish-Speaking Reddit
摘要
This study explores the expression of support to transgender individuals on Spanish speaking Reddit. Drawing on Speech Act Theory, the study combines manual coding with AI-assisted annotation to assess both the nature of supportive interactions and the reliability of automated tagging. More specifically, the study aims to answer two research questions: (i) What support strategies (if any) are present and in what frequency in the comments to transgender advice-seeking posts on Spanish-speaking Reddit? And (ii) To what extent does AI-assisted tagging coincide with human-based, manual codification of support? Results reveal a predominance of explicit support strategies such as giving advice and compliments, with a preference for informational support. The study underscores the role of affective pragmatics in marginalized digital communities and contributes to a more nuanced understanding of online queer discourse. It also suggests that AI tools can be useful in qualitative research although they still fail to identify more implicit or typographically altered expressions of support.
