Farmer intentions to continuously use mobile apps for agrometeorological and agronomic advisory services: technology continuance theory model analysis on user feedback in Vietnam and Thailand

This study examined user feedback from smallholder farmers in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, and Can Tho, Vietnam, to identify factors that influence their intentions to continue using ClimaFarm, a mobile application providing agrometeorological forecasts and agronomic advisory services. Data were collected from 151 farmers with prior ClimaFarm usage and analyzed with an adapted Technology Continuance Theory framework and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. The results revealed that continuance was significantly influenced by perceived usefulness (β = 0.261, p < 0.01), trust (β = 0.280, p < 0.01), satisfaction (β = 0.251, p < 0.05) and attitude (β = 0.247, p < 0.05), while household income showed a significant negative association (β = − 0.161, p < 0.05). Although most farmers remained active users, their reported challenges and reasons for discontinuing use included interface and language barriers, concerns about forecast accuracy and connectivity limitations, suggesting technological and usability barriers rather than a lack of perceived relevance of the advisory information. These findings contribute to post-adoption evaluation of digital agriculture initiatives. By quantitatively determining the factors influencing application usage and offering a relative comparison of their influence, these findings provide a pioneering empirical baseline for digital climate-smart agriculture solutions in Southeast Asia. Insights also offer a clear, evidence-based roadmap for designing and scaling digital advisory tools in climate-vulnerable regions.
