Egoismus und Kainismus. Positionen der Religionsgemeinschaften Südosteuropas zum russischen Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine
摘要
The recent past of Southeastern Europe is characterized by a number of violent conflicts which also severely affected religious communities. Therefore, it can be assumed that they have developed certain mechanisms to publicly process conflicts. The article is intended to provide a descriptive overview of the positions of the religious communities in Southeast Europe on the Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine between February 2022 and September 2023. In addition, a comparison relates to the content and structure of the statements. Do they articulate support, abstention or rejection of the war against Ukraine? Which content-related patterns of argumentation can be identified? What fundamental parallels and what differences can be found in the arguments? The results of this multi-religious comparison show, firstly, that in the majority of cases a strong rejection of the war is noticeable, and condemnation of Russia’s actions among the communities. The Russian Orthodox Church appears isolated from a Southeast European perspective, and also from the perspective of the Orthodox churches. Secondly, there is a wide range of positions on the spectrum from ignoring the war to directly and strongly condemning Russia. Thirdly, differences in reactions within religious denominations appear (Sunni Islam, Orthodox Christianity). Fourthly, the arguments used to condemn Russia in majority contain strong references to secular regulatory structures such as international law.
