Sustainable Production for Paper and Pulp Industry with Rice Straw Utilization Under Carbon Tax Policy

The paper and pulp industry generates enormous amounts of waste and significantly contributes to pollution. This industry depends heavily on woody raw materials for producing paper; excess cutting down of trees leads to deforestation and eradication of natural forest cover, eventually resulting in access heat waves over the globe. Therefore, this study highlights the alternative sustainable ways for the paper and pulp industry to mitigate the impact on the climate. Agricultural residues rice straw is taken as raw material for sustainable paper production. Sustainable mathematical modeling is developed, and two types of paper are produced: premium and low quality. A collection unit is established to collect the waste paper from the market using a recycling strategy. Carbon tax policy is being incorporated in the production and logistic phases of the paper and pulp industry to reduce the environmental impacts. The main objective of this research is to minimize the total cost function and optimize cycle length for manufacturers, retailers, and collection units. Classical optimization is considered a solution methodology, the sustainable acquisition model is proposed with the system cost, and the model is validated with numerical examples. The result shows that the overall cost of PPISC is reduced by 33.9938% using agricultural waste rice straw instead of virgin forest wood, which concludes that utilizing rice straw pulp as raw material for the paper and pulp industry is more profitable than using forest wood pulp. The sensitivity analysis demonstrates the rigidity of the model.
