<p>A medicine vial dating from the late 17th to 18th centuries was recovered from the well of the affluent Lippincott family in Eastampton, New Jersey. The bottle contained a residue identified as ferric pyrophosphate, a blood medicine that was likely used to treat an anemic condition. The medicine seems to have been used to address a particular historical condition called chlorosis or the “greensickness” that was widely recognized to afflict affluent young women coming into early adulthood. The condition of chlorosis with the symptoms of paleness, weakness, and amenorrhea was largely recognized as the result of young women’s engaging in anorexic behaviors to attain an expected body image in preparation for finding a marriage partner. As typical of medical understanding of the time, the medicine may have been used as an attempt to balance humors. The find of this medicine and its history could speak to the ancient and wide experiences of women’s conforming to social pressures for their body image.</p>
