Awareness, attitude and practice of dental lasers among periodontal practitioners in Pune Region – A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study
摘要
Dental lasers have been a revolutionary tool in periodontal therapy due to their precision and minimal invasiveness. However, their routine incorporation into periodontal practice remains limited. This study evaluates the awareness and perception of dental lasers among periodontists in Pune.
ObjectiveTo assess the level of awareness, understanding, and attitudes of periodontal practitioners and postgraduate students regarding the application of lasers in periodontal therapy.
MethodologyA cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 150 periodontists and postgraduate students in the Pune region. A 15-item structured questionnaire assessed knowledge, awareness, and clinical use of dental lasers.
ResultsThe study results showed that about 77.3% of the study participant were aware about the use of lasers in dental practice; whereas majority of the study participants (73.7%) had no previous experience of using lasers. Further, the main reason given for not incorporating lasers into practice was cost of equipment (45.3%) and mostly the study participants felt that only specialty practice (85.3%) needed lasers. About 80% of the study participants felt the need to include Lasers in the UG curriculum; whereas majority of the study participants felt use of lasers provided good healing, function and aesthetics.
ConclusionThis study aims to highlight the existing knowledge gap regarding dental laser technology and emphasizes the need for enhanced educational initiatives to promote its adoption in periodontal practice.
