Dental movement acceleration by Photobiomodulation. A systematic review

this systematic review was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of applying photobiomodulation in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement.
MethodsA systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and references of selected articles between August and September 2024. Studies involving participants with no previous orthodontic treatment, no systemic diseases, and with permanent dentition were included. Studies were excluded if they involved pregnant women, smokers, or participants with prior treatments that could affect bone metabolism. Strict inclusion criteria were employed, and the risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool across seven key domains. Data synthesis involved extracting information on study objectives, intervention protocols, and obtained results.
ResultsOf the initial 813 references, 17 studies met the inclusion criteria. Most studies indicated that laser application improves orthodontic treatment efficiency by accelerating tooth movement. However, some studies did not find significant improvements, possibly due to variations in application protocols.
ConclusionThe results of this review suggest that patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, the use of photobiomodulation accelerate the orthodontic tooth movement compared to those who do not receive this intervention.
