Purpose <p>Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a significant global health issue, especially in children. While iron supplements are effective in treating IDA, they can cause discoloration of primary teeth, particularly in the 0–3 age group. Polishing is commonly used to treat this discoloration. In this study, the effectiveness of Nd: YAG laser as an alternative approach to polishing, without the use of bleaching agents, was compared.</p> Methods <p>An in vitro study was conducted using 100 extracted caries-free anterior primary teeth, divided into two groups. One group was polished after being stained with iron syrup, while the other was treated with Nd: YAG laser(5watts, 250&#xa0;mJ, 20&#xa0;Hz) for 5&#xa0;s without any bleaching agent. Color changes before and after treatment were measured using a spectrophotometer. Statistical analyses were performed using the IBM SPSS-22 program, with the Mann-Whitney U test for intergroup comparisons of parameters and the Wilcoxon test for intragroup comparisons.</p> Results <p>The study found that the Nd: YAG laser group showed a significant reduction in discoloration compared to the polish group. Specifically, the laser group exhibited lower ∆E1 and ∆E3 values, indicating less discoloration and a more effective return to the original tooth color.(p: 0.001; <i>p</i> &lt; 0.05).</p> Conclusion <p>The Nd: YAG laser is a promising, effective, and rapid method for treating iron syrup-induced discoloration in primary teeth. Given its efficiency and the absence of aerosol generation, it is a preferable option over traditional polishing methods. Preventive measures should still be emphasized, particularly by pediatricians, to mitigate discoloration risks before they occur.</p>
