Effect of low-level laser therapy on pain resulting from orthodontic interproximal stripping: a randomized controlled trial

This study evaluated the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on pain resulting from interproximal stripping in orthodontic patients.
MethodsIn this double-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial, 21 orthodontic patients requiring interproximal stripping were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 7 each): LLLT (940 nm laser, 32 J/cm², 180 s, applied to labial and lingual surfaces of the anterior mandible), placebo (laser in off mode), and control (no laser). Pain levels were assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS) at 3, 24, and 72 h post-treatment. Data were analyzed using SPSS with an alpha level of 0.05.
ResultsAt 3 h post-treatment, patients in the LLLT group reported no pain (VAS = 0 at all time points). The placebo group experienced mild pain (VAS = 0.43 ± 0.53), while the control group reported significantly higher pain levels (VAS = 2.29 ± 0.76). Pain scores in the control group continued to decrease over time (VAS = 1.14 ± 0.90 at 3 h, 0.57 ± 0.79 at 24 h, and 0.14 ± 0.38 at 72 h). A significant difference in pain scores was observed among the three groups after adjusting for demographics and oral hygiene (P < 0.001). The LLLT and placebo groups had significantly lower mean pain scores compared to the control group (P < 0.001), but there was no significant difference between the LLLT and placebo groups (P = 1.00).
ConclusionLLLT effectively reduced pain associated with interproximal stripping in orthodontic patients. However, the placebo treatment yielded similar pain relief, suggesting a potential placebo effect.
