Purpose <p>To compare and evaluate the effect of soft tissue laser therapy and topical anaesthetic gel in the treatment of removable prosthesis induced traumatic ulceration.</p> Methods <p>A sample of 24 patients with traumatic ulcers resulting from removable prosthesis were selected and divided into two groups of 12 randomly. Twelve patients were treated with soft tissue laser therapy (Group I) and twelve with topical anaesthetic gel therapy (Group II). The pain scores were evaluated before and immediately post-laser or anaesthetic gel application and after three days and seven days using VAS scoring method. Comparative analysis between groups was performed using the independent <i>t</i>-test, while intragroup comparisons were carried out using the paired t-test (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05).</p> Results <p>In soft tissue laser therapy group, the VAS score significantly decreased from 8.64 before laser therapy to 0.64 immediately post-therapy, further decreasing to 0.45 at 3 days and 0.18 at 7 days. Whereas, the VAS score decreased from 8.09 before anesthetic gel application to 2.45 immediately post-therapy, followed by a slight increase to 4.00 at 3 days and then a decrease to 1.73 at 7 days. Laser therapy showed a statistically significant (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) reduction in pain and improved healing of prosthesis-induced ulcers in comparison to topical anesthetic gel therapy.</p> Conclusions <p>Soft tissue laser therapy reduced pain and improved healing in the treatment of removable prosthesis induced traumatic ulceration in comparison to topical anesthetic gel therapy.</p>
