<p>As a responsible space-faring agency, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) places high importance on space debris mitigation. Currently, ISRO follows and strives to improve compliance with the relevant internationally accepted guidelines, which involves incorporating appropriate measures during the design, operation, and disposal phases. In this paper, we present space debris mitigation efforts undertaken by ISRO. The measures include limiting the release of mission-related objects, preventing on-orbit accidental explosions through robust design measures and end-of-life ‘passivation’ or removal of active energy sources, operational collision avoidance for launch vehicles and spacecraft, disposal of satellites and launch vehicle upper stages at their end-of-life away from densely populated regions so that they do not pose any collision risks to other operational space objects. We focus on specific efforts undertaken to improve compliance with the mitigation guidelines. The challenges faced and the lessons learnt, inputs to space policy directives to promote space sustainability are also highlighted. We then present various activities undertaken to raise awareness of the growing space environmental concerns and ways to address them. We conclude with the future roadmap, which includes the Debris Free Space Mission, a major endeavour on space sustainability spearheaded by ISRO.</p>
