A Review: Methods of Fault Detection, Identification and Location in Conventional and Active AC Power Distribution System

Identifying and locating the fault is one of the major tasks in constructing effective distribution automation (DA) for the smart grid. The integration of distributed generators at a large scale makes the power distribution system active and more complex. It also causes the flow of power in bidirectional. Due to this increased complexity and bidirectional power flow, the traditional methods for detecting and locating the fault cannot give an acceptable result. Fault detection and location are always important for enabling quick repair and restoring power to the distribution system. A correct and fast fault location reduces interruption time, improves reliability, and minimizes economic losses in the power distribution system (PDS). Various methods available in the literature for detecting and locating the faults in conventional PDS and active PDS are analyzed in this article. Hence, the state of the art in fault detection, identification, and location (FDIL) in the power distribution system can be explored.
