Both in Germany and Switzerland it is rural areas where public provision of services is contested. Basic provision of services is statutory in Switzerland, based on universal standards. In Germany, there is no comprehensive legislation. Does this result in fuzzy services, less trust and a lack of solidarity? The article highlights crucial differences and different strategic pathways. In terms of integrated services and digitization, Germany and Switzerland show different approaches.
